Hello everyone! Im making a new fx-es for my upcoming movie, and I need some feedback. For now only mg and sg are done, more to come. What do you think about these?
P.S. I'll share them after finishing the movie.

I like the white particles, but at 0:04 they appear to stick to the wall? Don't like that. Also the shorter emitter for the 'explosion' sprite sort of ruins the fade... I think you need to either make it expand and have a short lifetime or fade opacity and longer lifetime. The wall-mark decals are nice, did you make them? Can't wait to see the other fx's

<3 this is amazing now. Perhaps shorter emitter on the white particles? If you spend this much time on mg... which makes up 0.01% of the weapons viewed in a fragmovie...
Can't wait for the rest! Good job.

I do understand that fiddling around with effects can be fun. I do not understand why you guys do not concentrate on cutting and editing a movie instead of the things that can be neglected at first.
The best quake movies were made years ago and nothing came close to that again I reckon. Awesome editing jobs can change that. Skins alone cannot change that.

For me it's about perfectionism... I like the maths/code aspect of it too, sort of a challenge to imagine something and make it a reality. You're right though, the fx is a very small part of what makes a good movie. However it does give an opportunity to be truly original in the look of the video, which is increasingly hard to achieve. But why start making a movie on the wrong foot?

I like perfectionism. It is hard to reach it if you are going away from it by altering quake 3. I consider the original game close to perfect or maybe I mean another word. It is the way it was released, so it is great like that. Things that make it more perfect are minor changes for me: I made a skin pack for myself which includes perfectly round health bubbles instead of the ones with too few polygons from the original files. That is a change I like. Most people dislike any movie having altered the original q3 files though. It's possible to create good-looking effects. I have not liked many skin sets I have seen in any quake movies over the last months or years. What I would like to see is a movie that has on-point sync with the music (like in this movie), shows no useless information (too much before or after the frag), keeps at its pace and goes without cheesy effects. Actually I could go completely without effects. That isReady movie I liked has relatively poor footage but there is only sync, no big effects at all and I like it a lot like this! Fun to watch. Now where do I end up if I have awesome weapon effects in a movie like that but worse sync and more cheesy effects?

I agree sync and editing is by far the most important part of a movie, but after watching demos in wolfcam I go and play quake and to me it's aesthetically ugly I hate the slow fps rocket explosion, no gibs (ok q3 doesn't have this problem) and no bloom. I think there is a line between subtle in-game effects e.g. skins, texture editing, sprites, fx in that too far from default is difficult to watch, but imo a bit of change from default is good. When I play I want performance, when I watch I want aesthetics. What do you think of ******ing french frogs?

I liked that very much. I actually did put the soundtrack together before another person took over because his transitions for the songs were better. Good original look back then. I like Dorftrottel more though. It has supreme graphics, no motion blur but 50fps. Wow, those textures, colors, everything! I am impressed with that a lot. q3 looks better than ql in my opinion. No blood? I was so disappointed. Light particle explosion, pfff

That...was awesome. Still, could have been slightly improved by better fx. But I know a lot of people don't enjoy non-default fx.

I do understand that fiddling around with effects can be fun. I do not understand why you guys do not concentrate on cutting and editing a movie instead of the things that can be neglected at first. I just do everything to make my movie perfect. From fx and config to editing and music. Editing it's a main thing in movie, but, for example, Renk's Edge of the Earth would not be so awesome without his great fx-es. Concentrating on such things its that makes good movies best.

I am not against this. I think that reaching something close to perfection is a lot easier than in the editing part. I have tried a new method of rating movies that I watch on esreality recently – I say out loud what I notice, right away. I make a list of good and bad things. It mostly starts with bad things.
Things pop up like Bad font choice Bad fov Bad enemy model Bad video quality Bad own model Bad frag message Good audio quality
That was pretty much the exact outcome of one of the latest videos. How sad is this?
I do not change effects in movies but it just now jumped to my head that I care about many small things in movies too. I would NEVER let my own video have random enemy models, ugly enemy models, bad audio quality, video quality or general quality. Always useful frag message, non-stretched award items and so on. Those are the basics. I instantly lose some respect for a video if somebody screws those things up. Same for you?

Yeah, like if you see a missing shader or cheap text intro you know the maker put no effort in. These are the basics, every movie should have a good config. For me there are two real summaries of rating: Respect - e.g. respect for fx, models, custom textures, creativity, editing or for frags. Has the editor thought "Does this look good?" Flow - e.g. editing that makes the frags and music go together, all feels good, freecamming at the right time etc Quite often there is not much of either, but "flow" is more difficult to achieve (and more important). The little things matter though! Overall good movie, but editing wise: -wtf frag message? -titles probably used default font... -lg interlude too long -Game sounds go in and out!? Point made. legless: I love the explosion! However the nade rotating is distracting for me, and the trail is absolutely horrible in my opinion.

Looks nice, not sure about the trail again Show one from pov? How many bfg frags do you have anyway?

Looks nice, not sure about the trail again Show one from pov? It's almost unnoticeable from pov. Not sure is it good or bad. (Click for full size.) How many bfg frags do you have anyway? Two. :3

legless still not convinced, but it's all subjective. Your movie afterall @auri mind control... Though I could have done the same for any movie on esr lately.

If anybody ever needs my advice on their movies, ask me. I have watched like all quake movies from 2006 onwards I reckon. I know a lot. Honest opinion and advice on improvements is what you get from me.

I hope you're joking. But then again it's your movie. And if you ruin it that makes less competition for my movie. I love it ;D

And then both your movies don't stand a chance because of the lack of good editing. Reason being all the energy went into making an animation for the teleport spawn. People will love that!

I finished my fx ages ago. I left gibs and teleport alone though. My skills don't go far enough to make them look good. *ahem* legless *ahem*
